In the run-up to the Gandeys Circus Greatest Showmen tour: Halloween Spooktacular at intu Merry Hill, every week we’ll be bringing you a Q&A with one of our amazing acts.

This week, we caught up with terrifying tyre juggler Andrey Vovk from Ukraine!

This mighty man with biceps of steel is a fresh new face at Gandeys Circus, so there’s lots to find out…

What’s your ideal Halloween costume?
“FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER!”


He’s no franken'weenie' that’s for sure!

And your best Halloween joke?
“What is Frankenstein’s favourite food?
Franken-furters!”

Don’t worry, his tyre juggling is much more impressive than his joke-telling…

  
How do you celebrate Halloween?
“Frightening local children and pinching their sweets!”

Something tells us Andrey is all bark and no bite…

Favourite meal?
Andrey’s perfect meal is Palov (also known as Plov), a traditional Uzbekistan dish made with rice, meat, grated carrots and onions, and often cooked over an open fire.

“James Bond”
We bet his favourite villain is Jaws too!

If you were not a circus performer, what job would you do?
Andrey would be a tyre fitter in a garage!

Origins of the Chinese Circus

200 BC – 200 AD – Han Dynasty, Sichuan Province – Juggler with balls and knives – Carving, stone of the “Hundred Games.” [source: Chinese Acrobatics Through The Ages, p15] The origins of the Chinese circus are not entirely crystal clear. There are debates and differing opinions when it comes to the exact history behind the circus, which is not a surprise when you take into account how long it has been around! First records of the Chinese circus - including carvings and mural paintings - date back more than 2,000 years to the Warring States period (475–221 BC), with evidence of performances developing further during the Qin and Han Dynasties (221 BC - 230 AD). Although it is believed that the art may have actually started around 3,000 years ago! One theory is that the acts originated in imperial courts, with performers entertaining the houses in a manner similar to western court jesters.
