Hong Kong 2019
Hong Kong's literal translation is 'spice' or 'fragrant harbour' from Cantonese.
Maybe you would like to try somewhere new in 2019? We've the perfect destination for you. It's centre, a faraway metropolis, rich in culture and class.
Our choice for planning a trip in the new year is: Hong Kong. Here are some of the most appealing things to do and see there.
Here's a close up Hong Kong? (thanks again google maps)
To put into perspective, Hong Kong is 63 times smaller than Ireland but has 2.2 more million people living there. It is on the southeast coast of China and is made up of Kowloon, New territories, Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island as well as 200 smaller peripheral islands.
Hong Kong has transformed from a small group of fishing villages into a cosmopolitan hub for international trade. You might think Hong Kong is as many skyscrapers you squeeze on an Island but 40% of the territory is country park and nature reserve.
Hong Kong has many hikes. 'Dragon's back' is one of them which sounds and looks incredible. Here's a link to some more fun facts about Hong Kong. Find out what the name 'Kowloon' has to do with dragons.
A sight to behold is the Tian Tan Buddha, which is also referred to as "Big Buddha." This is the largest seated outdoor Buddha and is arguably one of Hong Kong's most notable landmarks. It's only (*tries to catch breath) 268 steps
.
Trekking is not for everyone so you can always take a tram to Hong Kong's peak for some panoramic splendour. There is actually a 3.5km hike around the peak which doesn't seem too bad; especially with the marvelous surrounding views.
See if you experience the "Peak Tram Illusion"
Now, here's a little psychology for you. According to a 2013 study conducted by The University of Hong Kong, passengers of the tram will be deceived by high rises appearing to fall towards them. An individual's ability to detect tilts and inclines outside the tram, together with their reclined body position, supposedly cause this visual phenomena.
It's just the mind playing tricks!
So, when you've got your appetite back or you've burned more calories than you bargained for on a hike, here are some of the coolest places to eat and drink.
We would be dumb-pling not to mention dim sum. Steamed dumplings with various fillings are suggested to be some of the best from Hong Kong. Can you imagine them accompanied with some excellent seafood from the floating Jumbo Kingdom? This iconic fine-dining establishment is a free ferry away from the Aberdeen pier.
And for dessert, a Hong Kong street food staple: eggettes! The are similar to waffles and can have fun little prints in the bubbles. You might not be in the mood for a full meal, well luckily enough, eggettes come in many flavours and are just as good savoury.
To wash down these delicious treats, go visit some of the best bars in Hong Kong. Here are a couple that're definitely worth a mention.
This invite-only bar's concept is crazy. Its back-wall curves into ceiling with row after row of rhinoceros beetles. It doesn't even have a menu or listed address. The mystery is agreeably alluring: J.Boroski.
The Foxglove hidden behind what seems like a quintessentially British umbrella shop.
This suave speakeasy is gorgeous. With a replica 40s Gloster jet engine mounted behind the stage, sapphire leather, jazz and cocktails; you'll really feel the 50s first class fantasy.
Liking the sound of these bars? Here are a few more...
Fragrant harbour and for good reason. Wong Tai Sin Temple is architecturally pretty and is supposedly great for fortune telling. Go inhale the incense and see what your future awaits from the practice of kau cim.
A little less inexpensive indulgence would come in the form of a massage. Apparently, foot reflexology is trending. We imagine this would be fun to experience with friends! And for the family until February, The AIA Carnival!
