Oscars 2017 predictions

Dry clean your tuxedo or dust-off your designer dress – it's Oscar season!

The biggest day in Hollywood's calendar looms once again, with the 89th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday. There may be shocks, there may be surprises, there will certainly be speeches, and plenty of tears – crocodile or otherwise.

In preparation for Sunday's ceremony, we're going to take you through the nominees of the most eagerly-anticipated awards, and predict who we think will take home the statuettes.

So, fetch yourself a bucket of popcorn, turn your mobile phone onto silent, and put on your 3D glasses now...

BEST PICTURE

This is the big one! Always the most hotly-contested category and the most prestigious prize to take home. Is there a clear winner this year or are the nominees as balanced as an acrobat on a tightrope?

Nominees:

Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

Our prediction:

La La Land – This all-singing, all-dancing, feel-good film has taken the Oscars by storm, earning a record-equalling 14 nominations and winning cinema-goers' hearts worldwide.

BEST DIRECTOR

Just as no circus can work without its Ringmaster, no film can run without its Director.

Nominees:

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)
Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge)
Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester By The Sea)
Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)

Our prediction:

Damien Chazelle (La La Land) – Having already taken home the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics' Choice Award for directing La La Land, we think he may have this one in the bag.

BEST ACTOR

Daniel Day-Lewis isn't in the running this year, so it's fair game for one of the most sought-after prizes in Hollywood!

Nominees:

Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea)
Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)
Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)
Denzel Washington (Fences)

Our prediction:

Denzel Washington (Fences) – Having won the Oscar once before for an intense performance in Training Day, and been nominated several times more, Denzel is surely the bookies' choice for this one.

BEST ACTRESS

Meryl Streep is a familiar name in the lineup, having more nominations under her belt than you can fit clowns in a clown car! But will this year herald her third win in this category?

Nominees:

Isabelle Huppert (Elle)
Ruth Negga (Loving)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)
Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

Our prediction:

Natalie Portman (Jackie) – The contest seems to be primarily between Natalie Portman and Emma Stone, but we think the former will edge it for her portrayal of JFK's grieving wife in the aftermath of his assassination.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Nominees:

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Jeff Bridges (Hell Or High Water)
Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea)
Dev Patel (Lion)
Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

Our prediction:

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Nominees:

Viola Davis (Fences)
Naomie Harris (Moonlight)
Nicole Kidman (Lion)
Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures)
Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea)

Our prediction:

Viola Davis (Fences)

That's a wrap on our predictions for the main categories, but there are many, many more awards to be distributed on the night.

What are your predictions? Will you be watching live this Sunday?
